August 2019 : My Experience at ExxonMobil's Temuan Tribe Community Project

Writer's picture: Udhaiyah Priya Udhaiyah Priya

Good day, this will be my 1st community event. I’m currently an intern for P&GA at ExxonMobil, joined three weeks ago.

As a volunteer, helping with the recent EM’s community project with TrESS for the Temuan tribe belonging to a traditional village at Kampong Orang Asli Bukit Lagong, I like to share some of my experience.

Fitted out with astonishing health & safety measures, procedures, activities, transportation, lunch, beverages, and more. The 2019’s Community Project’ was carried on fighting fit on last Saturday, 24 August, from 7 am - 5 pm.

Overall, there were 50 EM’s employees, plus one intern, ‘Myself,’ who volunteered in the project.

Several minivans were arranged for the project at Menara ExxonMobil, and it took approximately 40 minutes’ drive to reach the native village.

Upon our arrival, we were break into six different groups that are assigned to an activity of the project. The activities that involved include:

1. Building a water distribution system to provide clean running water to the villagers - This includes laying and connecting pipes from the water source located in the forest to the village.

2. Digging an overflow drain for a cluster of 3 houses.

3. Making recycled soap using disinfected used hotel soap as the Soap4hope assignment.

4.Setting up a systematized herb garden for plants, where involves painting bamboo racks and filling them with compost.

5. Setting up a systematized vegetable garden, which consists of filling garden beds with compost and planting the seedlings.

6. Cleaning and setting up a “Sepak Takraw” sports ground. The sports ground will be equipped with solar panels prior to the event day.

Study shown One-third of the tribe was suffering from access to clean water supply and was surviving with dirty river water and rainwater that led to critical health problems to their people.

With the installation of the water supply to provide clean water, goals to solve a lot of their health issues.

Next, the Temuan tribe’s traditional knowledge of growing plants, herbs, vegetables, and fruit trees

was is in practice before Malaysia even received its independence rights.

By helping them set up a systematized garden, along with the combination of their practice of traditional knowledge on planting techniques, methods, and skills,

Do Not Only Functions On “Beautifying The Village.”

But as well “recognizes a pathway for a trademark” : anticipated for the Temuan tribe. Wherein the future, the tribe could endure and enhance this establishment and be ready to hire with their skills, knowledge, and services, wherever they’re called.

Other activities involved include upgrading the village with solar panels for electricity supply,

putting together a “Soap4hope project” via recycling disinfected used hotel soap into re-usable ones

and setting up a Sepak Takraw sports ground as a recreational activity primarily for the children, in hopes to help improve the quality of their lives.

The community project further reserves an art and craft center to showcase the exertions of the Temuan tribe of Kampong Orang Asli Bukit Lagong, in the lead of making it as a regional training center for other indigenous villages.

What's more, it was also pleasant to greet with the fellow members of the tribe. The people from the tribe were very humbled of our help.

They were also very hospitable. Like giving us a Durian Feast at end of the day. Most of us learned so much from them and the way of their lives — definitely a learning experience to keep.

Furthermore I'm honoured in meeting YB HEE LOY SIAN The Selangor State Executive Council ( Kajang) : State Environment, Green Technology, Science and Consumer Affairs Committee Chairman

In my humble standpoint, although I’m new to ExxonMobil, not really towards its community projects.

Before my father’s retirement of 37 years of service at ExxonMobil,
I’ve previously had the privilege of partaking in several of EM’s community project, which was extended to family members in the past.

However, my involvement in the Temuan tribe project would be the most sentimental one for me.

As an Australian Law grad,

my passionate on research and focus was always on "Indigenous People rights matters".

Taking this opportunity, I’m so glad that I volunteered and was apart in the community project, — especially helping them during Malaysia's independence month.

To sum up, I would like to thank EM, for making all this happen, as well to the other parties that were involved for this project and give a loud applaud for an outstanding Job to us all us for the efforts taken for this event to become a memorable core one.

THANK YOU
